Bare vs. Creative Repetition with a Ponytail
In class the other day we discussed the differences between Bare repetition and creative repetition. We got into small groups and watched some videos as a class then discussed whether we thought it was bare or creative repetition. Through this exercise I gained a strong idea of what each of the words meant.
Bare Repetition being the norm, the repetition of something that is stereotyped. Creative repetition being the opposite, taking something that is a norm and repeating it in different ways.
I decided to give an example of each form using a ponytail. The Bare example would be the photo below of a typical ponytail. the image that pops into your head when someone says ponytail and how 99% of girls put their hair up when working out. Most would consider it the most standard way to get your hair out of your face. If someone stood in a room of 100 girls and told them all to put their hair into a ponytail this is what the majority would do. Putting your hair through a hair tie is the definition of a ponytail.
Now, you might be wondering what a pony tail in the creative repetition form would be. I found a video on YouTube of a girl showing all different ways to make a ponytail (you can watch it below). The girl is repeating doing a ponytail over and over again but each time their is something different about it. Some have braids incorporated, others have multiple layers but they are all defined as a "ponytail".
Overall, creative repetition is the kind of repetition that you should strive for. Take something and make it your own, put your own twist on it. Noone likes a copycat.
